DEER TRAIL: The deer is peaceful, gentle, always alert and native to every continent except Australia. With keen eyes, radar ears, and twitchy nose, the deer is alwys highly aware of its surroundings as it gently lures us to new adventures. It leads us back to the primal wisdom of old teachings.

Deer Trail III - VII

Advanced Tracking Classes are offered every few years once enough students have met the pre-requisite classes. If you are interested in going further within tracking contact us directly for information or to arrange for a personal class.

Deer Trail: From Tracking To Trailing

Offered to ages 12-70+
Pre-requisites: Fox Trail Adventure, Advanced Deer Trail


During this amazing week we transition further from the study of tracks to the expansive study of trails. All things are connected and inter-linked together. Here we focus on un-focusing and seeing the inner-connectedness of all things. Animal patterns, feeding habits, food supplies for the area and the season, water sources, lunar patterns and so much more all play a role in effective high speed trailing. Actual applications of all you have learned will be put to use during this intense and high speed course. Be prepared to view tracking with a whole new set of eyes!!

Deer Trail: Advanced Deer Trail

Offered to ages 7-70+
Pre-requisite: Fox Trail Adventure

This advanced week is designed to deepen ones knowledge within the science and the art of the ancient tracking skills. This will include; animal track identification, sign identification, animal trail systems, gait patterns, scat analysis, plaster casting, home use of a tracking box, how to age tracks, animal forms - which is the imitation of animals to help further an understanding of their movements and tracks- track dynamics and their interrelationship with the rest of the landscape and much more. These skills will be learned through hands on activities, games, and through wandering adventures. We will also be going into basic search and rescue techniques including how to lost-proof yourself and your loved ones. All of these skills are taught in a fun and light-hearted environment. This week provides the student with a greater understanding of trailing and what is required to truly become a good tracker. The week ends with a fun and rewarding yet challenging exercise that tests your abilities on all levels. Adults and parents are in separate learning groups from the youth and teens, some evening activities and all meals are shared together.

Are you looking to learn the language of the woods? Interested in opening a doorway to a newly expanded level of awareness? Do you want to walk more at one with your surroundings? Balance both science and art in your life?

Tracking is so much more than just marks upon the ground. This fun and adventurous week of tracking and nature awareness teaches you the concentric rings of the forest, bird language and ways to minimize your own concentric rings, new skill levels in journaling, drawing, sketching, the expanding use of resource field guides, track casting, track dynamics, animal gaits and patterns, animal track and sign identification, understanding trail systems, gait patterns, scat analysis, proper plaster casting of tracks, an introduction to track aging and the philosophy of nature and awareness. Our curriculum is tailored to the age of each learning group so adults and parents are in separate learning groups from the youth and teens, some evening activities and all meals are shared together.
